Register a Domain
If you would like to have a web site, this implies that you require a domain. A domain name is a human-identifiable name that you type in your web browser's URL bar when you desire to access a given site.
Why Do You Require a Domain Name?
This is an issue I touch on due to the fact that this past week my boss brought forth the idea of launching a web site for our new project. That itself is not an issue, the issue is that he needs a web site, but has not made a decision yet about what it should look like, what it should contain, etc. All that he told me was the name of the site - its domain name. So, we now have an address for a yet-to-be-made web site and nothing aside from that.
The Domain Name
Each web site is located on a physical machine. That physical machine has its own physical address, known also as an Internet Protocol address. Accessing a website by writing the IP of the physical server in your browser, however, is not the best and most appropriate thing to do, so that was how and why domains appeared. Hence, a domain name corresponds to an IP on the web. Once it has been registered, that is.
Registering a Domain
To register a domain name, you first need to find a domain registrar. NTC Hosting offers the best solution for my present and future projects - they have a Domain Manager package, which can be easily upgraded to a web hosting plan later on - when my boss finally makes up his mind about what purpose the website will have.
Hence, to register a domain, you have to choose a name for your website. Then, you need to pick a top-level domain name - this is what follows the dot. For instance, in 'nba.com', '.com' is the Top-Level Domain (TLD). Apparently, '.com' signifies 'company', '.net' signifies 'network', '.org' signifies 'organization', etc.
Once you've selected your domain and your future registrar, you need to confirm whether the domain you want to register is free, because somebody else might have snatched it already, no matter how embarrassing it might be. Each domain name registrar, including NTC Hosting, offers a search functionality at their signup page, which verifies the availability of a specific domain. To continue with the registration of a domain name, you have to fill in some registrant info - the name, the place of residence, the mail address and the telephone number of the registrant of the domain name.
You've Registered a Domain... Now What?
I registered .com, .net, .info and .name domains for our project, according to the wish of my still-hesitating-about-the-function-of-the-future-website boss. I tried out the domain administration tool NTC Hosting is offering and found it very easy to use - everything is neatly arranged and, from what I saw in the web hosting Control Panel demo at their site, once we upgrade to a budget web hosting package, it will stay the same, just with a lot more functionalities. This, thank goodness, will spare me quite a bit of discomfort from having to manage my domain and hosting user account separately. So, while waiting for the boss to decide at least what the site should include, I was glad to discover that the domain administration dashboard offers DNS management and domain renewal options, and - a very useful functionality (!) - a parked domain template, which I resorted to in order to create a "Coming Soon" page for our domain names.
I was pretty glad to discover that NTC Hosting is offering a lot of country-code TLDs, since the project the site is meant for is multinational. Country-specific top-level domain names are handed over to local registries, which permit domain registrars to register cheap domains, usually at rates that are cheaper than those offered to the end clients. There are plenty of country-code Top-Level Domains: .co.uk for the United Kingdom, .es for Spain, .se for Sweden, .us for the United States of America, .ca for Canada, .com.au for Australia, etc. This, I suppose, will make my boss happy since we will be able to set up a local version of the web site for each country where the project will be presented.
